What We Do

Founded in 1986 in Kamathipura—then Asia’s largest red-light area—Prerana began with a bold mission: to break the cycle of intergenerational prostitution and ensure every child grows up with protection, dignity, and the freedom to choose their own future.

Over nearly four decades, Prerana has remained at the forefront of child protection in India. Its work is rooted in a strong child rights framework and focuses on addressing trafficking and gender-based sexual violence. Through innovative, community-based interventions, Prerana has transformed thousands of lives and contributed to lasting policy-level impact.

At the heart of its work is the Night Care Centre (NCC)—a flagship initiative that provides safe shelter for children in red-light areas.

Today, Prerana runs a wide range of programs across nine districts of Maharashtra, including: Educational Support Program offering curricular and co-curricular support to children in the red-light districts, Institutional Placement & Aftercare Program, Aagaaz (supporting child victims of sexual violence), Sanmaan (rehabilitating children rescued from begging), Aashiyana (strengthening families to prevent unnecessary separation), and our online Knowledge Resource Centre.
